    HONOR and TRADITION

    Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first widely observed on May 30th, 1868, to commemorate the sacrafices of Civil War Soldiers. This year, DLIFLC will give special tribute to two graduates, Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten and Lt. Col. John D. Loftis, killed in 2012 while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.

  • 238th Army Birthday Ball

    WHEN: Saturday, June 15
    WHERE: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Monterey

    The Presidio of Monterey’s 229th Military Intelligence Battalion is holding its annual Army Ball to commemorate the Army’s 238th birthday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel June 15. Military community members are invited to enjoy all-around entertainment: live music played by local musicians, skits performed by Soldier linguists, and delicious food presented by the experienced culinary staff. The Army Ball is a time-honored tradition and a unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of responsibility and the magnitude of the Army’s history in shaping the nation and the wider world.

  • U.S. Army Announces the Availability of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Future Development at the Presidio of Monterey

    PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. (May 3, 2013) -– The Department of the Army announces the availability of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Real Property Master Plan at the Presidio of Monterey (POM), California.

    The document analyzes and evaluates potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts that could occur upon implementation of proposed construction and renovation projects for future development at the installation. The area includes the POM and the Ord Military Community – a portion of the former Fort Ord military base – collectively referred to as the Presidio of Monterey installation.

    The Master Plan identifies facility improvements and phased construction to sustain and enhance the professional standards established by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Facilities, construction, improvements, renovations, replacements, and upgrades will ensure students, faculty, staff, military service members, and their families would have modern facilities consistent with Army standards well into the 21st Century. The overall goal is to improve the learning environment and quality of life at the POM installation.

  • Hagel announces fewer furlough days for DOD employees

    WASHINGTON (May 14, 2013) -- After weeks of review, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has concluded budget cuts will require most of the department's civilian employees to be furloughed beginning in July, but that because of other efforts to deal with the shortfall, only half of the 22 days originally envisioned as temporary layoffs will now be necessary.

    Meet DLIFLC's new provost from DLIFLC on Vimeo

    Dr. Betty Lou Leaver earned a B.A. in linguistics and M.A. in comparative literature at Penn State University. Having spent considerable time working in the Soviet Union and being the first American to conduct linguistic research at the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Akademgorodok, she earned her Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the Pushkin Institute in Moscow. Including Russian, she has studied 20 languages and has provided consultation to ministries of education and institutions of higher education in 24 countries.
